Fred Griffin: Facebook Smart Lists? What is it? Will Facebook Control It? What about Facebook Groups and Friend Lists?

Facebook Smart Lists? What is it? Will Facebook Control It? What about Facebook Groups and Friend Lists?

Facebook is rolling out "Smart Lists" this week.  These will replace Facebook Friend Lists, which have been available for about 3 years, but are only used by about 5% of Facebook Users.  Facebook may be reacting to Google+ Circles, where Users have more control over who they Share Information with.

Facebook, not you, will put your Friends into 3 Categories Classmates, Co-Workers, and Friends who live within 50 Miles.  These will be called Smart Lists.  (Ultimately, YOU will be able to edit and control the lists, according to Facebook).

     According to Mashable,

"Facebook is also introducing two other Friend Lists: Close Friends and Acquaintances. These lists are not Smart Lists — they do not automatically update themselves. However, they do have a few unique features. If you add a friend to Close Friends, for example, that friend’s posts will appear more prominently in your News Feed. On the other hand, adding a friend to the Acquaintances list will assure you don’t see that person’s posts unless it’s major news (i.e. an engagement)."

According to Mobiledia "Smart Lists' automatic grouping of users' friends may be convenient for users who don't like to spend a great deal of time working on their social networks' privacy issues.  On the other hand, other customers may not like Facebook's additional control over their lists of friends and co-workers, and may see Facebook's new Smart Lists program as a type of Privacy Violation."

     What about Facebook Groups

Groups give YOU total control over who belongs, who can post, who can see your posts.  Groups are great for Families, Offices and Companies, Clubs, Fraternities, Churches, or other Exclusive Entities that want a "Gateway" to who is allowed inside.

With Smart Lists being rolled out this week, it remains to be seen how Users will react, and how Facebook will respond.

* * *   As always, keep an eye on your Facebook Settings and Privacy Settings.  This is a website that is Notorious for "re-setting" your preferences without your knowledge or consent! * * *

Call me crazy, but I am getting a little upset with Facebook messing with my friends setup.   They keep saying we are changing this, but you can change it back, seriously?    How about I opt into your new program.

Yvonne, Facebook is exerting WAY too much control over people.

This is a wonderful way to spend more time on the site and less time working. I opt to work more and more $$$$$,

Only my opinion, I still like land line phones like in the 50's when I was a kid.  LOL

I can only talk so long on a cell phone before I revert back to a landline... I also like FB the way it is!

Fred, Thanks for this information about those Facebook Groups.. I believe this answers my questions. I have placed all my real estate agents and associates into one list, but now, I believe it better to place them in a Group.

Now it's a competition between Facebook and the Google +, but i am looking forward on how the two will make social media the best way of communicating with theor friends and relatives.

Jerry, thanks for inspiring me to research this topic.  I got educated reviewing various Tech Publications, and looking through the endless "Help Pages" on Facebook.   :)

Rob, Google+ has succeeded at motivating Facebook (and Twitter) to revamp their "Friends and Following" policies.  It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
