Tupelo Honey! Produced in Northwest Florida near Tallahassee, Tupelo is the Rarest and Best Honey

Tupelo Honey is very light, usually a gold or amber color.  This Honey does not granulate (turn to sugar).  It commands a Premium Price.   The Tupelo Gum Tree, from which this Honey is produced, grows along the Apalachicola and Chipola Rivers in Northwest Florida.  "Bee Boxes" are placed in the swamps on elevated stands (to prevent them from flooding).

Purityaccording to Wikipedia, "Prior to the tupelo bloom, all earlier season honeys are stripped from the bees to avoid contamination with lesser grades produced earlier. Likewise, as soon as bloom is finished, the honey must be removed quickly before the bees have a chance to add other types of nectar."

The town of Wewahitchka (known by the locals as "Wee-Wah") hosts an Annual Tupelo Honey Festival on the 3rd Saturday of May.  There are celebrations, a parade, arts and crafts, speeches, and of course, a lot of Tupelo Honey for consumption or purchase.

According to Blog Critics, Tupelo Honey may have important Health Benefits:

"Tupelo honey, like other types of honey, goes beyond taste. True Tupelo honey is fat free, healthy, and even some diabetics are allowed to consume it at their physician’s discretion. It may also help in other areas of health.

In folklore, honey is a consistent homeopathic remedy, deemed useful for topical application. Scientists have now discovered there is some fact to this lore. Because honey has high acidity and low water activity, it acts as an antibacterial force, mirroring the tasks of Hydrogen peroxide.

Tupelo honey may also benefit people inside their bodies. Full of polyphenols, honey has the potential to fill the body with antioxidants. These antioxidants can reduce colon damage in people who have colitis. It may also help improve digestion, strengthen immunity, and lower cholesterol."

Fred - whenever I'm sick I love tea with honey and it's supposed to be good for you. Thanks for all the information on it - very interesting!

Laura, the production this year was rather low (not enough rain last spring).  But they've got it.   One nice thing about living in Tallahassee, I can get this at local stores and avoid the shipping charges!

Kristine,  Florida also produces Orange Blossom Honey, which is excellent.   But Tupelo really is the best.  FWIW, I am a way way distant cousin of the Laniers (my great-grandmother's maiden name)... so I am partial to that producer.
